The project focuses on designing a climate responsive residence with an attached studio and homestay, located in the harsh cold and dry climate of Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh. Realizing the potential of sun and strong winds in this region, passive methods of heating and producing renewable energy for the building are integrated with the building components such as the south facing walls, windows and roof. The design is inspired by the resilient fortress-like structures of the traditional Buddhist monasteries commonly found in Spiti. Naturally available materials - earth, stone and wood are used for a sustainable climatic performance.
