The aim of the studio was to learn and explore different kinds of mechanisms which can be used in indoor furniture keeping in mind that it should be placed in a compact house. To explore different kinds of mechanism, we started off the semester with making five different kinds of mechanisms which could be possibly used in furniture. After making models of these mechanisms, we studied a few examples of compact houses and how it has furniture which are of multiple uses. After understanding the spaces, we explored a few forms keeping in mind the three main aspects of abstractions, ie. linear, planer and volumetric forms and made models and sketches for it. After studying mechanism, forms and spaces, as we finalised the design problem and studied the user according to the function. In this project, the main concept is vertical reachability and how it can be multifunctional with a horizontal surface used for sitting purposes. The main area of usability of this furniture is kitchen and living area.
