The studio provides an opportunity to understand deployable mechanisms and strcutures, which is a necessity in today’s world. It offers a dialogue between architectural and structural design. The course of the studio is divided into short exercises, each one providing a different set of learnings. The studio began with exploring deployability in nature. Nature is full of surprises and deployment and foldability is one of them. Next, we took up a case study of a deployable household object, urging us to start thinking about joineries and mechanisms. We then conducted a market survey of materials, their properties, availability, cost and transportation. We also understood deployable systems through origami and scissor mechanisms. Our next exercise included studying a deployable structure, understanding it’s joineries, it’s mechanism and the usage of the material.
The design process for the final project started with conceptualisation and ideation. We created our own deployable system with it’s joinery and working. Finally, we analysed and designed our design on STAAD Pro. Ultimately, the design reflects a combination of acquired architectural and structural understanding of deployable systems.
