The Housing strategy studio based on the city of Rajkot aims at making decent and affordable housing accessible to all income groups. It also promotes upward mobility of households on the housing ladder with new choices by proposing a bundle of sub strategies. The sub strategies also mention the role of the state as an enabler or provider. Rajkot's economy is responsible to a great extent for rapid growth of the region. Due to this it garners an influx of migration from the surrounding cities. The growing population caused due to factors like migration must be catered by the housing market and if not done so, the housing shortage of the city will increase. Thus, the current housing situation of Rajkot is assessed. This forms a baseline to tackle the issues and envisage the future of Rajkot. If we look at housing largely in any city, there is a large stock of housing which is old, dilapidated and is dead stock. The sub strategy of enhancement/ redevelopment of formal sub-standard units focuses on this stock and what policies are there to provide the same. As some of these households in Rajkot are on public land, there is always contestation and litigation of land titles. In case of Public Housing Redevelopment, there isn’t enough incentive for the developer for undertaking the project. Considering these challenges, reforms in the current policies are recommended. Implementation of these reforms will ensure better living conditions for the people of Rajkot. Further, a Capital Investment Plan is proposed for all the sub strategies which will contribute to the Municipal Budget.
