The project aims to explore the concept of single-person dwelling while responding primarily to the needs of the differently-abled and elderly. Responding to the dense urban fabric of Dadar Matunga, Mumbai, this project takes the shape of high- to mid-rise towers, yet still attempts to create communal and “alone” spaces at the human scale. By breaking up the vertical tower form and staggering the floor-plate, shaded niches, balconies and courtyards are created generating smaller-scale communal spaces, besides the larger-scale ones at the ground and terrace levels.

The studio kickstarted with the art of photogrammetry. photo’ - light ‘gram’ - drawing ‘metry’ - measurement Photogrammetry is the science of making measurements from photographs. The input to photogrammetry is photographs, and the output is typically a map, a drawing, a measurement, or a 3D model of some real-world object or scene. Many of the maps we use today are created with photogrammetry and photographs taken from aircraft.
Tracing over the photogrammetry gave drawings which helped in understanding the nuances of a single person dwelling, the hidden organization, the freedom, self entertainment, recreation, privacy, control and thresholds. The various informal and unconventional means by a single person to make life easier and productive while not feeling lonely but attaining a perfect wellbeing.
The detailed dwelling typlogies are an attempt to crack a form that works according to the organization following the principle of form follows function. Different pieces of furniture were placed before freezing the above forms. The objects placed also give a sense of life and the possible uses and living possibilities of the inhabitant.
A short site introduction was done and understood which primarily revolved around understanding building heights, immediate land use, past developments na diste evolution, urban fabric density and the open and built morphology.
After site introduction, all seven unit types were placed from larger to smaller types which yielded niche like clusters that provided hierarchy and pockets of spaces that could be put to any use by the inhabitants be it private, public or shared. The larger spaces formed between structures were urban inserts of various kinds of recreational opportunities.
The building fabrics on the two extreme ends were drastically different, so as to respond to the same the building hiights were altered and three different types were introduced which were eight, twelve and eighteen storey structures. The back and forth staggering provided shade and carved out balcony spaces. The exclusively inserted corridor spaces functions to provide horizontal circulation to all dwelling types.
