The studio's objective was to develop an understanding for preparing a Strategic Transportation Plan. Mahesana was chosen to analyze the current situation and present a long-term vision of 20 years for the city's transportation system. With rapid urbanization, and the geographic location of Mahesana, the city is growing as an industrial town. Accidents and congestion due to haphazard street parking have become a severe problem. An increase in the number of people with vehicle ownership, and decreases in public transportation, lead to traffic congestion and accidents. Pedestrians and two-wheeler users, motorized and non-motorized, have been identified as the most affected modes. Poor pedestrian facilities in the city continue to cause pedestrian deaths and serious injuries. As a result, primary interventions such as pedestrianizing streets with high walk trips, traffic signs and speed limits and improvements in pedestrian facilities can reduce traffic accidents in the city.
