The Paimio Sanatorium complex is located on pine-forested pastoral land where it was believed that the sunlight and fresh air would aid in the healing of the patient.
Claiming to act as a “Medical Instrument”, Paimio Sanatorium was limited to the tool-ness of an instrument. Like any medical tool that is efficient in treating an injury or illness, the sanatorium was deduced to efficient prevention of tuberculosis by functionally providing all that is needed. The sanatorium does not offer an holistic approach towards wellness and focuses on cure.
The intervention proposes a new mass in the southern garden that integrates with Aalto’s existing building and takes the advantage of the sunlight. New relationships are established through programmatic reorganisation and a variety of spaces eventually enhancing healing process.
