Raikhad is situated on the Eastern Sabarmati riverbank, at the heart of the walled heritage city. It is enclosed by the fort wall that acted as a flood barrier and has undergone conservative surgeries over time to make the Eastern parts accessible. The historic citadel at Bhadra houses the remnants of Ahmedabad’s royal fort and axis, continuing to hold importance to this day. Today Bhadra faces challenges of reduced economic value due to underutilized development potential in public land which prevails along the city wall. There are existing assets in Bhadra precinct but due to lack of connection and synergy between them there is a need felt for redefining Bhadra as a heritage precinct. This LAP looks at redefining public realm network to connect Bhadra precinct to the riverfront and redevelop Government institutions and offices in a mixed use district with added facilities for tourist, heritage and civic areas. This framework plan shall help in boosting the economic value by increasing the floor space while providing space for facilities in the form of public open spaces that will increase the footfall of people, thus creating a pedestrian oriented heritage precinct.
