The Housing Strategy Studio, based in the city of Vadodara, aims to make decent and affordable housing accessible to all income groups. It also promotes the upward mobility of households on the housing ladder with new choices by proposing a bundle of sub-strategies. The sub-strategies also mention the role of the state as an enabler or provider. This increasing population has to be catered for by the housing market, and insufficient supply of the same results in an increasing housing shortage in the city. The demand is much higher than the supply provided by the state and the private sector, and thus there is a significant gap between the two. Thus, assessing the present condition creates a baseline to envision the future and how these issues can be tackled. If we look at housing largely in any city, there is a large stock of housing that is old, dilapidated, and dead. A framework of sub-strategies targeting all the income groups is proposed, and the redevelopment and enhancement of formal sub-standard units in Vadodara deal with the problems related to the housing shortage in the city. Further, a capital investment plan has been proposed collectively under all the strategies for the year 2033, which is dealt with keeping in mind the framed vision for the future of the city. Each stage of the studio has its own reflections and carves out a way in which affordable, decent, and better ways of living can be promoted for its residents.
