The tradition of ‘Pol’ housing which has a history of more than 600 years is recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO. It was an amazing experience for me to know the lifestyle in a ‘pol’. Since, the site to develop a bed and breakfast facility is located in ‘Dev Ji Saraiya Pol’, I tried to follow the traditional way of designing buildings according to the degree of privacy one needs in a particular space and also give the user an experience of connecting with the outside while dwelling inside the building.

Shade casted by overhangs and jharokhas of upper floors on narrow streets seemed to create a sense of warmth within the space. Various kinds of interactions happening across the streets via jharokhas, otlas drew my attention. Hence, I choose to take forward the idea of connection in my design.

The initial exercise where I measure drew various aspects of my home, and the parallel exercise of construction site visits helped me in understanding the sequence of construction and also in making decisions of details in my design project.
