Arpanam, the entrance exhibition space at the very entrance of Padmanabhapuram, acts as a pavilion, rest space, a roofed walkthrough and exhibition space for the visitors where the main exhibit is the kinetic element. The shape of the element is inspired by the jaalis of Padmanabhapuram. The jaalis of Padmanabhapuram, also known as the ‘kilivathil’ was designed for women to witness the happenings of the outer world without anyone seeing them and was placed mostly on the narrow corridors of Padmanabhapuram. The kinetic element breaks the shackles of the convention and creates a visual connection from outside as well as inside. The structure is kept simple to bring the kinetic element to focus.
