From ancient palaces and temples to the more recently added sewer pumping stations, the Ghats at Varanasi are a juxtaposition of various elements. The existing structures of sewer pumping stations are very important for the functioning of the overall sewage system of the city. Because of their stark form, and other factors like materiality and color, they form a contrast to the existing structures on the Ghats.
Moreover, they create a different sense of place with the way they are anchored on the Ghats.
The intent is to re-look at these structures as an opportunity to engage with the day-to-day activities on the Ghats. Also, looking for a different way to deal with a structure that is very functional in nature and trying to integrate this in the existing fabric of the Ghats, with an intent to establish a connection between the upper city and the lower Ghats. Through this integration of essential infrastructure and architecture for people, designing a prototype that can be extrapolated on other Ghats of the city, and further to other parts of the country.
