The portfolio is a compilation of exercises conducted in Understanding the City, Foundation Studio. It aims to understand the city and in depth understand the selected 1 square kilometre of precinct within the city. Research, primary and secondary surveys and personal interviews are some of the methodologies followed for optimum results. The portfolio is divided into three parts to better comprehend the data. First part focuses on introducing the city and precinct. A city level public space is further studied to understand the city identity. The second part studies the character of precincts on the fringes through a comparative analysis. The analysis is done among the precincts of Mumbai, Maharashtra, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh and Ballari, Karnataka to understand the behavior of fringes in different tiers of cities. The third part studies the tradeoffs and livelihood choices made by people for better living conditions through jobs, housing choices and transportation.
