Anna Nagar was planned as a residential suburb along the western edge of Chennai city. With urban sprawl extending the city boundary rapidly to the west, the neighbourhood has evolved into a node that connects the eastern core to the western industrial region. Spatial planning and policy decisions have created stark differences in the demography and built composition of the West and East of Anna Nagar. The West houses a diverse population in terms of socio-economic backgrounds as a result of deliberate planning. This study analyses the causes of this diversity and the node qualities of the locality.
