Tropical evergreen forest (Central western Ghats, Aralam wildlife sanctuary) forms the watershed area of Cheenkannipuzha and Urittipuzha, the tributaries of River Valapattanam, an important river to Kannur district. Various forms of life inhabiting the forest as well as human population rely on this water system for daily life. This water system is nourished by a healthy watershed that is supported by the riparian edge. The perennial fresh water system forms the backbone of the river and supply water throughout the year by maintaining and sustaining the ecosystem within them. The sheer rawness of nature of the sanctuary supports and conserves the forest ecosystem through a healthy riparian edge by being a lifeline virtually.
