The formation of Gujarat in 1960 and its subsequent expansion towards the western side of Sabarmati river sparked planning and development in several locations of the city. Gulbai Tekra, located 3.5km from the city centre, was one of the first localities to develop on the western side of Sabarmati, identified by the migration of Rajasthani sculptors in the1850s. With the formation of GUDTP in 1976 and commencement of its Town Planning Scheme (TP20), it was planned as a largely residential neighbourhood with several bungalows. This portfolio is aimed at studying the factors that produce diverse characters within the precinct.
