Bapunagar is situated on the east of Sabarmati River and is a part of the old city of Ahmedabad. Industries were set up in nearby areas during the British rule and workers needed a place to stay, which is when settlement in Bapunagar began. Thus, the communities developed in an unplanned manner and with the growth of industrialization, these settlements became denser over time. These settlements were impromptu since the workers started living on their own without any government intervention. These settlements form the basic characteristic of the area which reflects the old city nature. It is a predominantly residential zone. Majority residents of Bapunagar belong to the low income group as most of them are workers in nearby factories and industries. Despite this fact, people followed a basic grid iron pattern for their streets on their own while forming the communities. No regulations were followed, thus these dense communities could not flourish in future leading to a inconsistent growth of the Bapunagar area.
