Nirnay Nagar, a predominantly residential area, is located 6 km west from Ashram road at the intersection of two major roads- Chandlodia road and New Balol Cross road – of the city. Nirnay Nagar exemplifies the market-influenced development where availability of land and land prices determine the housing typology, which influences the character of streets. The interrelationship between built form and streets characters demonstrated that it is important to mix two different land uses- the study area has a combination of residential and commercial land use- to create more active streets. The presence of human activities on streets enhances the perception of safety among road users.
