The city of Kolhapur dates back to the first century B.C. and is located on the southern banks of river Panchaganga where different rulers established their capital. The city is also known as "Dakshin Kashi" owing to the presence of Mahalaxmi Ambabal Temple and its geographical location resembling that of Kashi In Varanasi. The city has a historic core with the Ambabal temple in the centre and certain settlements defines the urban form. Kolhapur is rich in the cultural aspect as there are lot of festivals celebrated, temple rituals, reknowned crafts and arts and is famous for its cuisine. The architecture of the city has a dominant Colonial Influence and traces of Hindu and Jain temple architecture. The city has seen development In different aspects of city planning and basic amenities of the citizens. The city had. pioneered in educating the castes which were considered to be inferior and had a social binding which provided these castes a means of livelihood and also ensured smooth running of the city.
