Calico mills is a site located on the east of River Sabarmati which was shutdown in 1980’s. There are primarily Muslim and Hindu communities. People in this area work in a variety of occupations such as pakodi selling, broom making, kite making, incense making, and so on. The women of the community does sewing and embroidery during their free time, which they have inherited from their ancestor who used to work in the Calico mills. The community is conscious of the work they do, but there is no designated space for it. As a result, they work in smaller pockets around their homes and open areas with fewer resources. The project ‘Pesha laye pehchan’ focuses on providing dedicated spaces for each occupation of the community, to work as well as display and earn money from their artwork. This will create an identity for them and eventually help them to lead an uplifted lifestyle.
