India Gate as a site of protest: space and contestations

 India Gate's role as a site of protest in the recent decade has developed an image as a backdrop for civil protest. This theatricality is analysed through spatial studies. There has been a shift in how the site is perceived post-independence to protest. Conducting a historical and current protest data analysis it is concluded that, India Gate has become a conducive site for protest in Delhi over the recent decade. Undertaking a spatial analysis the site’s; location, visibility, and planning are considered, implying that its presence is more powerful as a site of protest from its nearby sites through a Foucauldian lens. The historical and spatial analysis reveals the various ways the space is politicized. This spatial study will contribute to the scholarship on public spaces and protest sites.
