The project in the Kochrab Ashram, Ahmedabad, extracted from Gandhiji’s affection towards children. He believed that children are “Flowers from God’s garden” . He was able to interact with kids on their level and play with them while also imparting moral lessons. Gandhi actually used the “learn while you play” strategy used today fifty years ago. Derived from learning as a sacred activity, the preschool is a sacred place to nurture the flowers from the god’s garden. The design is based on the “Reggio Emilia” alternative educational philosophy. Along with parents and teachers, the environment itself, including architecture and nature, serves as a third educator.
