The Battle of Saragarhi was fought between British Raj and Afghan Tribesman on 12 September 1897 when Afghan tribesman attacked the outpost of Saragarhi , surrounding the fort to assault it. The 21 Sikh soldiers refused to surrender and were wiped out during the last stand. The memorial is designed to commemorate the heroic self-sacrifice of 21 Sikh soldiers while defending the Saragarhi outpost against the attack of Afghan tribesmen. The spaces are recessed to the ground, imparting the feeling of being submerged and the spirit of patriotism that a soldier has for the motherland. The memorial conveys a "sense of cohesion" throughout the spaces, created by an endless loop of physical elements. The Gurudwara being the culmination , defines the significance of Sikhism in the battle.
