'Understanding the city' is a foundation studio for first semester at faculty of Planning PG programs aiming to develop an intimate understanding of the city. Each student was given a one square km precinct to study and research in different areas. The precinct in this publication is Saraspur located in the Eastern part of Ahmedabad. Textile Mills developed in the city of Ahmedabad because of which the areas like Saraspur which were nearer to the Kalupur Railway station started expanding. Saraspur consists of majorly Industrial Areas with a dominant residential typology called Chawls.

Saraspur on the map of Ahmedabad The study is done for one square kilometer of area in Saraspur. None of the major arterial roads pass through this part of the area. It lies in between Kalupur Railway station and LBS Stadium.
Composition of Saraspur The area is a composition of different urban grains contributing to the unique spatial formation and density of the precinct.
Evolution of Saraspur Stagnancy can be seen in the infrastructural development of the area. There are multiple reasons and socio-economic factors that contributed to the current situation of infrastructure in the area.
Physical Transformation of Saraspur The physical transformation of area includes parcelization of defunct mill lands into smaller industrial estates and commercial areas. The residential areas have not witnessed major evolution.
Streets of Saraspur Streets of the area showcase a stark contrast as one moves from the main road to the local private roads.
Street Markets of Saraspur One of the most common professions in the households of Saraspur is street vendoring. The vendors have created a street market on the roads of Saraspur which has given a distinctive character to the area.
Built Form of Saraspur The area is built in a horizontal plane with very less number of buildings as highrises. It is covered with Industrial estates and Chawls as Housing Typology for the majority of Landuse. There are also GHB Row Housing that contribute to the residential typology.
Public realm of Saraspur. Public realm of Saraspur has majority activities on the street by the residents of slums and chawls.
Infrastructure of Saraspur Saraspur is a complicated ward to manage as a lot of it lies in slum typolgy where there is different approach for infrastructural services that are being provided.
Income groups and Expenditure Analysis This analysis in the precinct looks at preferences of people belonging from different income groups affecting the utilization of public infrastructure and displaying the relationship of Per Capita space to Income groups as well.
