Shamla ni Pol is situated in the Khadia area of the walled city of Ahmedabad. The Pol is one of the oldest Jain settlements in the old city. Over the period of time many Jain families moved out and new migrated communities started living in the Pol. Changes because of migrants are transforming the Pol and demonstrates the adaptability and co-existence of various communities. The concept of Community Cohesion was taken as an urban regeneration approach. The main focus of the project is upon shared vision, inclusion of those with diverse backgrounds, equal opportunity and supportive relationships between individuals. Establishing a common interest through income generating activities and learning activities in vacant houses, linking social and religious connections through developing shared community spaces, promoting multi-culture contacts through socio- cultural activities and developing common shared open spaces- Chowks.
The Studio began with a 2 week exercise to critically read and analyse the World Heritage (WH) Site of the Historic City of Ahmedabad which formed the base for individual work. This exercise was done in groups of 2-3 students. Click on the button below (view additional work) to view the group's work.
