Traditional neighbourhoods of the city core being wholesome resolute of the culture, climate and construction is one such context to learn from for their constants and variables over time, for the given milieu of the place and people. While self-realised neighbourhoods of the slum settlements best reflect the fundamental needs and priorities within the constrained resources. Communal bonds are formed and where we associate ourselves with. We aim to re-learn these fundamentals of space making from the most intimate habitats to create humane and plural living environments. The studio brief is thus focused on understanding, experiencing, analysing and interpreting the wisdom of the Vernacular in contemporary times. Situated in contexts where people’s involvement has been primary in shaping their built environment around, such as traditional neighbourhoods (i.e. Pols etc.) and /or Self realised spontaneous settlements (i.e. Squatter settlements/ slums etc.) and translating its ethos and principles in creating high density contemporary urban neighbourhoods which are humane in scale, interactive between neighbours, plural for diverse value’s coexistence and sustainable for the given context of climate and construction.
