The research examines late 19th-century architecture in an attempt to identify the nature of political symbolism, if there is any at all, in the construction of buildings in Colonial India. Using Tim Ingold’s framework of technology as a process, the research aims to decode this relationship at various stages of the construction rather than just as the final output. In order to do this, the primary case study is the Public Works Department Building in Shimla, one of the earliest iron and steel frame buildings in the hill station.
