The studio addresses fundamentals of building physics which are essential for building energy efficiency using theory and experimentation. It comprises of three modules, concepts of building physics, measurement and experimentation of environmental variables and building energy simulation. It initiates with topics like climate analysis, solar geometry and concepts of heat transfer and moves towards the application of these concepts – Ice box challenge, in which a 45m3 envelope is designed by considering the heat transfer principles and an experiment is conducted. The last module comprises of simulation modelling, which analyzes the impact of different design strategies like orientation, shading devices, and material assemblies on thermal loads of the building with the help of Design-Builder software.
