Space Kinematics

The discipline of architecture deals with two kinds of spaces – one which is static and transforms with factors such as activities, light, etc. and other which is dynamic and transforms itself through its envelope and elements of the space. This studio focused on the transformative potential of architecture and allowed students to explore intricacies of making and detailing through the idea of transforming roofs/walls/facades/floor. The course also focused on architectural and spatial qualities primarily derived from processes of making. The course entailed an introduction to the logic of assembly of building elements as well as executing techniques. Along with this, an understanding of the manufacturing process of building elements vis a vis design thinking via the processes of making and understanding of materials through various design exercises was carried out. Assimilating learning from previous exercises, the studio attempted to design existing building elements with new behavioral properties, eventually transforming the existing space. For instance, projects such as a pavilion that becomes a larger shelter as required, a self-shading wall and a retractable roofing system for mosques were designed.
